In order to meet the needs of working sport industry professionals who are looking to increase their knowledge of sport management while obtaining a high level of professional growth, the Master of Science in Sport Management Studies online program was created and implemented within the California University of Pennsylvania Department of Exercise Science and Sport Studies in collaboration with the CalU Global Online Network. Students must be enrolled as full-time cohort members and follow the sequence of courses based on their entry into the program (July or January).
The emphasis of the program is on preparing students for positions of management and leadership within the sport industry. The program recognizes the need for developing the student’s capacity to solve many problems arising from ever-changing economic difficulties, political and regulatory conditions, and marketing strategies. Students study and discuss real-life scenarios to ensure their competency in today’s competitive sport industry.
Students enrolled in the online program are primarily full-time working adults who are highly motivated and self-disciplined in seeking completion of a graduate degree. Distance learning via the Web is an exciting opportunity that offers the student the flexibility to take classes and earn a graduate degree without leaving the home or job.
Students are required to enroll in the program as full-time members. Students have the option of completing the Sport Management Track, the Intercollegiate Athletic Administration Track, or the Sports Counseling Track. Please note, as with many Colleges and Universities, delivery of a program is contingent upon there is enough interest in the track to offer a cohort start. Program length consists of 13 consecutive months, with new cohorts beginning in January and July. Approximately 30 s
tudents per cohort learn and communicate online and regularly function as a group of interactive peers. This virtual community creates a lively, dynamic educational experience that enriches the collaborative skills essential for success in the sport industry. The Intercollegiate Athletic Administration track has been developed in consultation with the NCAA.
A Certificate program, called Post-Bachelor's Certification, is also available to students who desire to just take courses in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration or Sports Counseling programs. This programs consist of the same four courses offered as part of the regular Master's Degree program. All four courses in each of the program can be completed during our full summer sessions.
The curricular content is well positioned to be presented via the Internet. Sport Management theory and principles are presented with streaming video, narrated PowerPoint presentations, and online forums. Threaded discussion groups, chat rooms, and e-mail allow the cohorts to communicate and interact, adding unique insight into the discussion.
The Master of Science in Sport Management Studies online program curriculum has been designed to align with NASPE/NASSM standards for program approval, with the expectation of applying for program approval in the near future.
