HSSS Program Faculty Martin Miller

Martin K. Miller,MS, ATC, PES, CES, CSCS

Marty Miller is a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) health and fitness educator with more than 12 years experience in sports medicine, performance enhancement and injury prevention.

His academic credentials include a BS in Sports Medicine and Physical Education from Canisius College (NY) and a MS in Exercise Science & Injury Prevention from California University of Pennsylvania.

Miller is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) with the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES), Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), and has completed advance training as an Integrated Flexibility Specialist and Sports Fitness Specialist through NASM.

His career began in professional baseball in 1994 with the Montreal Expos organization, where as a certified athletic trainer he helped coordinate all aspects of care for major and minor league players. He also assisted in post-operative rehabilitation of players and the administration of team’s strength and conditioning program.

The 1994 Expos posted the best record in the National League and had it not been for the strike-shortened season, they most likely would have earned the franchise’s first trip ever to the World Series. During his four-year tenure (1994-1997) with the Expos, the organization earned the reputation as having one of the best farm systems in all of professional baseball.

Many of the players Miller treated would later prove themselves to be World Champions with other teams and win individual awards such as the Cy Young Award, Gold Glove Award, Silver Slugger Award, League MVP, and World Series MVP.

Miller left the Expos organization after the 1997 season and was later named the Director of Fitness at the BallenIsles Country Club, a five-star golf course in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, that has hosted the PGA Championship, the World Cup Championship and the PGA Seniors' Championship.

At BallenIsles he oversees the day-to-day operations of a 6,000 square-foot fitness center and supervises a team of 30 health and fitness professionals. In this position he also trains tennis and golf pros, and during the baseball off-season continues to work with players seeking his performance enhancement and injury-prevention expertise. His current client list includes players in the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations.

When he is not training elite athletes in Florida, Miller serves as an instructor for NASM Optimum Performance Training (OPT) for the Fitness Professional and Corrective Exercise Specialist seminars across the nation.

He travels extensively as a health and fitness subject matter expert for lectures and panel discussions, sits on the NASM Board of Certification Commission, and is an adjunct faculty member with the California University of Pennsylvania, where he instructs online graduate-level courses in Corrective Exercise/Program Design to physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other healthcare professionals.
