Professor Margaret A. Marcinek

Margaret  Marcinek, Ed.D, RN.

Dr. Margaret (Peg) Marcinek is a Professor in the Department of Health Science and Sport Studies at California University of Pennsylvania.  She received her bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) from Penn State University in 1970.  In 1973 she completed a master of science in nursing (MSN) at the University of Maryland as a clinical specialist in cardiovascular critical-care nursing.  Dr. Marcinek earned a doctorate in Education with a major in Curriculum and Instruction from West Virginia University in 1983.

Upon completing her bachelor's degree, Dr. Marcinek was employed as a critical-care nurse in the coronary care unit of Presbyterian University Hospital, part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  Other previous employment included 10 years on the faculty of the West Virginia University School of Nursing, where she progressed through the academic ranks from instructor to associate professor.  While at WVU, Dr. Marcinek taught a variety of upper-division nursing courses, including pathophysiology, critical-care nursing, research, and ethics.  During her tenure there, she was honored to receive the West Virginia University School of Nursing Outstanding Teacher Award for two consecutive years.

Dr. Marcinek has been employed at California University since 1983, when she initiated the RN to BSN program.  From 1985 to 2004, Dr. Marcinek chaired the Nursing program, successfully steering it through three national accreditation visits from the National League for Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. During her tenure at California University, Dr. Marcinek has actively served on numerous university committees, including the Science and Technology Council, Department Chairs Forum, Provost Council, University Curriculum Committee, and the Academic Affairs Council.  She co-chaired the University Outcomes Assessment Committee and served on the State System of Higher Education Student Learning Assessment Resource Group.  In 2001, she received the California University Presidential Faculty Award for Teaching.  In 2004, Dr. Marcinek accepted the position of Interim Associate Provost, and served in this administrative capacity until 2006, when she decided to return to faculty.

Dr. Marcinek has several professional publications in peer-reviewed journals, including articles on hypertension, stress and the surgical patient, the right to die, metabolic responses following surgery, curriculum development, and teaching problem-solving skills.  She also authored a chapter on Burns which was published in the 4th through the 7th editions of Hudak and Gallo's Critical Care Nursing, a major critical care textbook. Throughout her career, Dr. Marcinek has presented papers at regional and national conferences on topics including: methods of teaching research,  outcomes assessment, curriculum development and evaluation, innovative teaching strategies, ethical issues in health care, learning styles, and technology in education. 

On a personal note, Dr. Marcinek is married and the mother of a daughter of whom she is very proud.  In her spare time, Dr. Marcinek enjoys golfing, traveling, walking, reading, and is an avid Penn State football fan.
