The Department of Academic Development Services helps students successfully adjust to college and cope effectively with academic and related non-academic challenges.  Services provided include the following:

Instruction and Tutoring
A three-credit course entitled Critical Thinking and Reading (EDU 110)  and a one-credit course entitled, Career Planning (XCP 194) are offered to first year students.  Faculty also teach First Year Seminar (UNI 100).

Tutors review lecture notes, textbooks and other course materials; teach course related vocabulary words; prepare students for completion of course assignments; and demonstrate the use of course linked technologies.  Tutoring is available for courses in most academic disciplines.

Counseling
Counselors provide developmental academic advisement and educational and career guidance.  New students are interviewed and receive both an orientation and an academic plan.  Counselors help students schedule and register for courses; monitor each student's academic performance; and provide students with information concerning academic policy, procedures, and practices.  Students are encouraged to discuss personal problems with counselors.  All discussions are confidential.   Students are often referred to one of the several other student service offices for additional assistance.

In addition, three grant programs are administered by the department -

SSS provides academic support services to university students whose educational and economic backgrounds make completion of a degree program especially difficult.  Upward Bound assists eligible students in completing a program of secondary education and to enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education.  The U.S. Department of Education has authorized California's Upward Bound project to serve 9th through 12th grade students from eleven public school districts located in Fayette and Greene Counties in Pennsylvania.
