Department of Earth Science Honor Societies

Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU) is an international honor society in geography.  Gamma Theta Upsilon was founded in 1928 and became a national organization in 1931.  In 1976 GTU became a voting member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS).

The society is governed under a constitution and bylaws.  Nine elected officers, including two student representatives, form the Executive Committee.  The annual business meeting, held at the fall meeting of the National Council for Geographic Education, is open to all GTU members.

The purposes of GTU are:  to further professional interest in Geography; to strengthen student and professional training through academic experiences in addition to those of the classroom; to advance the status of Geography as a discipline for study and investigation; to encourage student research and to promote an outlet for publication; to create and administer funds for furthering graduate studey and/or research in the field of Geography.

Epsilon Pi Phi - The National Honor Society Students.  Undergraduate membership shall be open to individuals who meet all of the following requirements:
          (a)  Regualarly enrolled and pursuing a degree or academic certificate studies program with a 
                 major or minor in emergency management.
          (b)  Have completed 15 semester hours of course work in courses in emergency management
                 and 24 semester hours of total academic course work.
          (c)   Maintain a minimum average of 3.2 on a 4-point scale and an overall average 3.5 on a
                 4-point scale in the major courses.
          (d)  Must have one letter of reference.  The letter must be from an academic advisor,
                 professor or dean of the academic institute the student is attending.

Sigma Gamma Epsilon - The National Honor Society for Earth Sciences Zeta Alpha Chaper.  The Society was established to recognize scholarship and professionalism in the Earth Sciences.  It has for its objectives the scholastic, scientific, and professional advancement of its members and the extension of relations of friendship and assistance among colleges and universities which are devoted to the advancement of the Earth Sciences.

The Society was founded on March 30, 1915, at The University of Kansas.  Nearly 200 chapters throughout the United States have been installed since 1915.  Sigma Gamma Epsilon is governed by student members and a legislative authority of student representatives and faculty advisors.
