Parks and Recreation
The primary philosophy and goals of the Parks and Recreation Management curriculum at California University of Pennsylvania is to improve the quality of life for our citizens and our communities. To accomplish this, it is our responsibility to develop qualified and professional leadership capable of enabling people to achieve individual and family leisure life-styles which will enrich one’s life and the societal community. This curriculum is also dedicated to the effective preservation, management, and utilization of our natural resources.
The steadily growing amounts of leisure time at the disposal of increasing numbers of American people place demands upon both the natural resource base and the social framework of our nation. An expanding population, increased disposable per capita income, vastly improved modes of transportation, trends toward urbanization and suburbanization, higher education levels, mechanization, and the growing propensity of the part of society to live in a more rich and a more complete life has created the demand for parks and recreation management professionals.
The curriculum places equal emphasis on both general and professional education. Coursework in general education, which includes broad exposure to the humanities, the natural sciences, and the social sciences, is designed to gives each student greater self awareness and the enhancement of critical thinking abilities. Core courses in the major area of concentration are designed to provide the student with the background and skills necessary to assume the leadership responsibilities of the parks and recreation management professional.
