Internships
Besides being a source of academic credits that count toward meeting graduation requirements, the internship program offers other benefits to students. For example, it offers an opportunity for students to apply the concepts and principles they have learned to a real world setting. It is also an opportunity to confirm career interests, and to establish business contacts that may enhance future job prospects.
INTERNSHIP POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
I. QUALIFICATIONS
1.) An internship may be taken during the student's junior or senior year.
2.) The student must have a GPA of at least 2.75 overall and 3.0 in their major before an internship assignment is permitted.
II. REQUIREMENTS
I.) Each semester hour of credit to be earned by the student will require a minimum of 40 hours of internship participation (i.e.- 3 credits will require 120 hours work during the semester). A maximum of 12 credit hours may be taken during an internship. Internship credits can be used as either business electives or free electives.
2.) Upon completion of the internship, the student must submit a 5-10 page paper which should include a summary of
a.) company organization and mission
b.) duties and responsibilities assumed while serving as an intern
c.) student evaluation of the internship experience and internship site
3.) Upon completion of the internship, the student must also obtain an employer evaluation to verify hours worked and to comment on work performance.
III. REGISTRATION PROCEDURE
1.) The student should discuss internship possibilities and expectations with the Internship Coordinator.
2.) After successfully obtaining an internship position, the student should submit the following three documents to the Internship Coordinator
a) add/drop form
b) student internship form
c) employment verification letter
- This letter must be obtained from the employer for the purpose of verifying employment and describing internship duties in some detail.
- A sample letter may be obtained from the Internship Coordinator or department office.

COURSE SYLLABUS
BUSINESS INTERNSHIP (BUS 492)
PROFESSOR DAVID T. JONES FALL 2003
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The student is placed with a business firm, government agency, ornon-profit Organization. The internship will enable students to apply their knowledge in a real business setting and should greatly enhance job opportunities upon graduation. The experience will also contribute to further development of communication skills and confidence.
COURSE EVALUATION
(1) Job Updates (10 points each) - These documents should summarize recent
job activities and should be one (1) to two (2) pages in length. They must be submitted on time, in good form, and may be either delivered to the department office, e-mailed, or faxed. The due dates are February 22, 2004 and April 5, 2004.
(2) Employer Evaluation (20 points) - This document should be one(1) to
two (2) pages in length and should cover job performance, work ethic, and attitude. This document may be delivered to the department office, e-mailed, or faxed. It is the student's responsibility to make sure this document is submitted. The final due date is April 29, 2004; however, it may be submitted earlier if required hours and/or assignments are completed.
(3) Final Paper (60 points) - This document should be seven (7) to ten (10) pages in length and should cover the following areas:
(a) Company organization and mission
- organization chart, mission statement/philosophy,
products/services, types of clients, etc.
(b) Duties and responsibilities assumed while serving as an intern
- this section should also include student observations relating to classroom vs. real-world experience.
(e) Student evaluation of internship experience and job site
- this section should offer the student's frank opinion on the work atmosphere, quality of assignments, and overall opinion of the experience.
This document should be enclosed in a report cover and may be either dropped off or sent to the department office. The final due date is April 29, 2004; however, it may be submitted earlier if required hours and/or assignments are completed. The student's final grade will be determined as follows:
90-100 points = A
80 - 89 points = B
70 - 79 points = C
60 - 69 points = D
Below 60 points = F
