Student Computing Resources

Using the University Computer Network

A student’s university account id is the first three (3) letters of their last name followed by four(4) digits.  For students that already have an account this last four digits should be the last four digits of their social security number.  However, the university is moving away from using social security numbers so that new student accounts will have four random digits as part of their account id.  This account id is used for their email and to access other computing resources available to them such as accessing Blackboard and creating a web page.

bulletStudents can access their email either through Outlook or through a web browser by connecting to http://owamail.cup.edu/.  They must enter a valid email address and their password to access their email through the Internet.

bulletA network drive is also provided to the students similar to the one that is provided to faculty.  However, student N drive space is more limited than faculty N drive space.  Students can access their N drive from off campus also by going to ftp://ndrives.cup.edu and logging into the system.

bulletA web server is provided for students to create their own web pages.  This server can be used for course assignments or to post their own web pages.  The URL for this area is http://students.cup.edu/.

bulletComputer labs are provided for student use.  The Microsoft Office Suite has been installed on all the PCs in all the computer labs.  At this time printing is free in the open labs but the various departments must provide paper in the specialized labs.

bulletThe Instructional Computing Facility (ICF) is open for all students to use.  The ICF is currently located in Noss Hall.   One of the computer labs contains scanners for students to use to help with their coursework.  Most of the PCs in the ICF also have CD and DVD burners installed in them.  Hours for the ICF can be found at http://www.cup.edu/administration/computingservices/icf.htm.
bulletThere are labs installed for designated departments around campus.  These labs may have specialized software installed that is relevant for instruction in various programs in these departments.  These labs are usually restricted to use by the students in the programs and the faculty that instruct these classes.  You may be able to use these labs with special permission by the department.
bulletThere are computer labs located in the residence halls for students residing there.  These are small labs and are provided as a courtesy for students who may not have brought a PC with them.
