Women's Studies Requirements for a minor in Women's Studies

Women's Studies

Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the diverse experiences, contributions, and perspectives of women specifically, and includes analysis of gender. Women's Studies facilitates a process of discovering how the concept of gender shapes human lives. Gender is a social construct that interacts with other categories of analysis, such as race, class, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, identity, citizenship, nationality, and religion. This minor explores how these complex interactions influence the use and distribution of power in a society.
Minor in Women's Studies

A minor in Women's Studies better equips a person for professional and personal life by promoting critical-thinking skills as well as a keen awareness of how gender and diversity affect perspectives and experiences. Advancement and success in many professional fields require taking advantage of the recent explosion of new information about gender, multiculturalism, and cultural competence. Students with a background in Women's Studies may pursue diverse careers in fields such as business, human relations, government, journalism, medicine, the law, management, social service agencies, education, or communications, to name a few. Some choose to pursue advanced degrees.
The Women's Studies program affords students the opportunity to examine the expanding scholarship on women and gender that affects numerous disciplines. The exploration and learning process in this program is achieved through active learning and exposure to various written and oral communication styles. Students enrolled in the Women's Studies minor benefit tangibly from their studies.
