Peer Mentoring Responsibilities and Expectations

Responsibilities and Expectations

What do mentors do?

Mentors will...

  • assist new students with the adjustment to college
  • offer guidance, support, encouragement and friendship
  • inform new students about campus resources and activities
  • serve as a role model

A mentor will do the above by...

  • contacting the new student prior to the beginning of the fall semester
  • meeting the protégé face to face before the beginning of the fall semester
  • sending weekly emails to the protégé
  • periodical phone calls and face-to-face visits throughout the protégé's first year at Cal U

Participation includes...

  • attending mentor training session during the spring semester
  • attending a fall " Meet and Greet" gathering with the mentors and protégés at the beginning of the fall semester.
  • maintaining contact with the new student throughout the student's first year at Cal U.
  • assisting academic departments with orientation events (as needed)

What is expected of a first year student who has a mentor?

A first year Cal U student who is assigned a mentor is called a protégé. As a protégé, you will:

  • respect the time and effort of your mentor by returning phone calls and emails
  • keep scheduled meeting times and notify your mentor in advance if you must cancel or miss an appointment
  • keep your mentor and Mentoring Director aware of any changes in your address, phone number, email and/or major.
