Peer Mentoring

What is a peer mentor?

A Peer Mentor is an upperclass student who is assigned a first semester student within the same academic department. The peer mentor serves as a support and resource person who provides information, encouragement and guidance during a student's first year at Cal U. It is our goal that the mentoring relationship will enhance the new student's transition to the University.

Why sign up for a Cal U Peer Mentor?

Cal U freshman that have Peer Mentors move onto their second year of college at a 10% higher rate than freshman without mentors!

The Mentoring Program is:

  • A built-in resource/support person in your major, who you can talk to this summer about what to expect when you arrive on campus.
  • A guide to help you find your way around, before classes even start.
  • Someone who can keep you up to date on requirements & deadlines in your major, as well as on events throughout campus, your whole freshman year.
  • A mentor who is matched with you based on your similarities in living arrangements, major, hobbies, and other interests. It’s a great way to find out how to get involved in campus life, meet new people and still remain on track with academics.

The Mentoring Program is NOT:

  • A tutoring program.
  • Time-consuming.
  • A parent/authority figure telling you what to do.
  • "Just for nerds."
