Historical Connection of Inspiration, Eminent Leadership:

On November 20, 1885, Frederick Douglass, former slave, orator, author, statesman, and trusted advisor to President Abraham Lincoln, visited the California University of Pennsylvania campus.

Mission of the Institute:

The Institute, inspired by the example and spirit of Frederick Douglass, promotes his ideals and principles and upholds him as a model for the furthering of educational excellence and human understanding throughout California University of Pennsylvania and the communities it serves.

Institute Description:

The Frederick Douglass Institute is to be a catalyst for the institutionalization of the concepts of multiculturalism with special emphasis on race, gender and liberty. The Institute promotes the value of diversity throughout the California University community. It aims to further understand the past, support advancement and achievement in the present, and prepare for a more inclusive future.

Guiding Principles:

To achieve its mission, the Institute will:

  1. Encourage scholarly research and publication in the study of the importance of multiculturalism, with special emphasis on race, gender, and liberty.
  2. Incorporate the values and concepts of multiculturalism, with particular emphasis on race, gender, and liberty, throughout the university and its academic curricula.
  3. Support research and scholarly activities that pursue Frederick Douglass' concerns for a diverse and free society.
  4. Encourage leadership development to enable students to carry out the principles and ideals of Frederick Douglass.
