Introduction

One of the most important, but often overlooked, aspects of any university is its campus. A university needs buildings for professors to teach in, students to gather in, and people to eat in. A university needs a library, a gymnasium, an auditorium, classrooms, art studios, and dormitory rooms. And what would an American university be without a stadium for football games?

California University of Pennsylvania's campus is remarkable in many ways. Grass, trees, bushes, and flowers are far more abundant than on many a college campus. California's campus is spacious, and on sunny days, one might wonder if there isn't some amazing machine in one of the science buildings that makes the sky so blue. The buildings vary greatly in size, architectural style, and age, and each has its own particular beauty. However, perhaps the most remarkable aspect is that California University was not founded by wealthy benefactors or powerful groups of people. Almost every building, every plot of land, and every renovation project on campus was a hard-fought victory.

This site has been created to honor the men and women who worked so very hard in the past 150 years to erect the buildings we live, work, educate, and learn in. We honor the founders, men such as Job Johnson and John Dixon, principals and presidents such as Theodore Noss, John Watkins, and Robert Steele, as well as professors, alumni, administrators, and the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, whose selfless donations of time, funds, and labor mean so very much to us.

This site owes thanks to the many people who helped in its development. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Helen Grochmal, Library Services
  • Dr. Kade Kos, Library Services
  • Dr. Laura Ann Tuennerman-Kaplan, History and Political Science
